Open kitchen shelving seems to be cropping up everywhere, even in rental apartments. After having open shelves for a few months I have come to love them. It breaks up the monotony of cabinet after cabinet and reflects some of your own character.
Its one of the pieces I love the most about our apartment and makes it feel more like home. Since we have picked up pieces from all over, it also reflects a bit of our travels and experiences and therefore some happy memories. Here is some inspiration for your own open shelves.
My approach here was to have it look pretty but also be practical. Items on the lower shelves are used more often than those on the top shelf, which are slightly less convenient to reach. Our biggest, heaviest plates were put in a separate cabinet, so as not to put too much weight and pressure on these shelves. The smaller plates and bowls are easily accessible on the lower shelf and used more often for things like lunch, food prep, or a quick snack.
Most of the dishes are simple in color so as not to be overwhelming, but I have added in a few of our more colorful dishes to make it feel happy. I included a few warmer items, such as the bread baskets and salad bowl as well as some more decorative items like the marble cutting board and fun Coca-Cola signs. Lastly, there are a few plants tossed in there including two basil plants which we get lots and lots of use out of during the week.
