On the Beach in Mallorca

By Lauren | Updated: Apr 4, 2015 | Published: Feb 20, 2015 | Leave a Comment

Here at Break Beach on the eastern coast of Mallorca, the beach is not lined with hotels, or restaurants, or even noisy seagulls. It is simply soft sand, crystal waters, and cloud dusted blue skies.

Break Beach, or Platja des Trenc in Catalan, is one of many beaches on the island of Mallorca, the largest of the Balearic Islands. Mallorca, along with Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera are the largest four islands that comprise the archipelago off the coast of Spain in the Mediterranean Sea.

These four islands have much in common with Barcelona, and just like in Catalunya, everyone speaks Catalan. Break Beach is an hour’s drive east from Palma, the largest city on the island. If you’re staying in Palma, you’ll need to rent a car to get here, but it is worth the scenic drive.

The landscape is reminiscent of the flashback scenes from the first Godfather: arid terrain, desert flowers, and blue skies. Unlike some of the more “hidden” beaches on the island, this one has a large parking lot and its only a short walk down to the beach.

Having an easy place to park and only a quick walk to the beach is certainly a welcome feature. It beats a thirty-minute walk on a dusty road and dirt path under the hot sun. There’s also a lot more personal space (also very welcome). Since the beach is long, wide and sandy, there’s plenty of room for everyone to throw down a blanket without bumping elbows with your neighbors.

The secret about Mallorca is that because it’s a relatively small island, and there are plenty of beach goers in the summer, there really are no hidden beaches. They have all been discovered. And this is coming from a friend who grew up on the island. Though who knows; perhaps the locals are ultra protective of their yet “undiscovered” beaches.

Though there’s no need to check every nook and cranny on the island, Break Beach has it all. Simple beauty, wide-open space, and knee deep aquamarine waters as far as your legs will take you. So bring your relaxing face, a beach towel, and a cooler full of refreshments and settle in for a good day. Bathing suit optional.
