This Banana Bread Glaze is made with two simple ingredients, powdered sugar and maple syrup, and it goes well with any banana bread. The subtle maple flavor that comes from using real maple syrup is the perfect complement to the flavors in banana bread. It also makes any banana bread or sweet bread an easy and simple, but beautiful dessert.

This glaze, which is also like an icing, would also go well with this banana bread baked in a square baking dish or on this Banana Cake instead of chocolate frosting.

I love this glaze because it is super easy. It is nice and thick, but easily spreadable, and it's just the right proportion for a sweet bread, without any leftovers.

Banana Bread Glaze Ingredients:

Banana Bread Glaze is made with two simple ingredients.

  • Powdered Sugar: Any brand will do. The powdered sugar creates a nice white glaze that contrasts with the color of the banana bread.
  • Maple Syrup: Be sure to use real maple syrup if possible.

How to Make Banana Bread Glaze

Below are the step-by-step instructions and photos for how to make Banana Bread Glaze.

Step 1. Add powdered sugar and maple syrup to a small bowl. With a spoon, stir to combine.

Step 2. Once your loaf of banana bread has fully cooled, pour the maple glaze over the loaf, spreading gently with the back of a spoon.

Expert Tip: If the glaze is too thin, slowly add more powdered sugar. If the glaze is too thick, slowly add more maple syrup.

Variations

There are dozens of variations of glazes for sweet breads. Here are a few easy ones.

Vanilla Glaze: Make a glaze with powdered sugar, vanilla extract and a tiny bit of water. Start with a ¾ cup powdered sugar, ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract and 1 tablespoon water. Add additional water in 1 teaspoon increments. Be sure not to overdo it or the glaze will be runny.

Apple Cider Glaze: Start with ¾ cup powdered sugar and 1 tablespoon of apple cider. If needed add more apple cider in 1 teaspoon increments.

Lemon Glaze: One of my other favorites is a lemon glaze that I use on my Raspberry Lemon Loaf. It uses 2 tablespoons lemon juice and ¾ cup powdered sugar. This glaze is best on quick breads like lemon loaf, poppyseed, or blueberry.

Banana Bread Frosting: Simple and classic, a rich creamy frosting made with cream cheese.

Instructions

  • Add powdered sugar and maple syrup to a small bowl. With a spoon, stir to combine.
  • Once your loaf of banana bread has fully cooled, pour the maple glaze over the loaf, spreading gently with the back of a spoon.

Notes

Maple Syrup: Use real maple syrup, not pancake syrup if possible.
When adding the maple glaze to a sweet bread, like banana bread, ensure the bread is fully cooled before adding the glaze. If the bread is still warm, the glaze will melt and slide off the top of the bread.
