Pintxos Part 1: San Sebastian

By Lauren | Updated: Apr 4, 2015 | Published: Jul 29, 2014 | Leave a Comment

Feast your eyes on this. This past weekend I had the pleasure of taking a whirlwind culinary tour of some of the many mouthwatering pinxtos in San Sebastian. San Sebastian is a lush, green town sitting on the northern coast of Spain on the Bay of Biscay. Like Bilbao, they are famous for their mini portioned servings of food. However, in San Sebastian they seemed to have stepped it up a notch. Here’s the first glimpse…

After dropping off our stuff at our hostel, we ran to the closest pintxos bar. (Are we still young enough to be staying in a hostel? …the jury is still out on that one.) We ended up choosing Egostari, mostly because we could see the pintxos sitting on the bar beckoning us in from the street. Here we (bravely) tried the anchovy topped tuna pintxo and the savory crispy jamon with cheese.

Happy to have the traditional anchovy pintxo behind us, we stopped at a second bar called, Nagusia Lau, where we went to town. The pintxo experience is similar to that of a bar crawl, but with food. You stop at one pintxo bar, order two or three pintxos, gobble them down, and then move onto the next bar to order a couple more. Below is a teaser of what they had to offer.

As soon as I woke up the next morning there was but one image that popped into my head: a buttery, maple syrup soaked Belgian waffle. Why, you ask? I’m not quite sure.  It even seemed a little strange to me considering that we were in a Michelin star studded Spanish town.

I figured it was a dream at best, having rarely if ever seen real (and affordable) maple syrup since we left the US about a year ago. However, fate this morning happened to be on my side. There was a Canadian (which means they must have maple syrup, right?) Crepe restaurant in town! Bags packed, shoes on, and we’re off on our quest.

My glorious Belgian waffle was the perfect halftime show to another day’s worth of pintxos. Having loved Nagusia Lau so much, we returned the following day to try a few of what we didn’t get our hand on the first time.

Our next project will be to attempt to recreate these masterpieces at home. Check back in soon to see how we do in adapting these pintxos to make them our own!
