Barcelona: The Gothic Quarter

By Lauren | Updated: Nov 30, 2023 | Published: Oct 10, 2014 | Leave a Comment

The Gothic Quarter, also known as El Barri Gótic, sits at the heart of the city of Barcelona. Its winding narrow streets are filled with ancient Roman and medieval structures. If you are visiting Barcelona, this neighborhood, along with the neighboring El Born, is a must see.

Here you will find small squares filled with markets, as well as the Cathedral of Barcelona and what was once a Roman wall and aqueduct.  Many of the Roman and medieval buildings (though not all) were reconstructed in the 1920s.

While wandering around downtown, be sure to look up occasionally.  Otherwise you may miss the sculptures and intricate carvings on the building walls.

Though the Gothic Quarter is small, the sights change dramatically and quickly as you continue to navigate the maze-like neighborhood.
