These Chocolate Dipped Rice Krispie Treats are super easy with only 5 simple ingredients and are made in the microwave rather than on the stovetop. This makes it faster to put together and easier to clean up.

I provide a few key tips to make these treats super simple and details on which ingredients and quantities make the process easier.

Several Rice Krispie Treats dipped in chocolate and decorated with sprinkles on a white background.

I love the combination of the rich chocolate and crunchy, crispy treats. It's a great recipe to serve at kids' birthday parties, game days, a special after school snack, or holidays like Valentine's Day (use pink, red, or festive sprinkles) or Halloween (use orange or purple sprinkles). You could even use paper straws or a popsicle stick to make them into rice krispie treat pops.

For more crispy sweet treats that have a satisfying crunch, try these extra crispy Rice Krispie Cookies, White Chocolate Pretzel Cookies, or these Oreo Cheesecake Brownies.

🛒 Ingredients:

Below are the ingredients needed to make Chocolate Dipped Rice Krispie Treats.

Ingredients needed to make chocolate dipped rice Krispie treats.
  • Butter: I use salted butter, but unsalted butter is fine too. You could consider browning the butter, but I like to keep this dessert easy and save browning the butter for Brown Butter Chocolate Chip Banana Bread or Espresso Chocolate Chunk Cookies.
  • Marshmallows: The recipe calls for standard-size marshmallows, but any size, like mini marshmallows, will work as long as it is roughly 12oz. Fresh marshmallows work better than older ones.
  • Rice Krispies: I use the store brand Rice Krispie cereal, but most brands here will work just fine. Classic Rice Krispie treats call for 5 cups of Rice Krispies cereal. Instead, use 7 cups because it creates a firmer Rice Krispie Treat that holds up to being dipped in chocolate. You can even consider adding up to 8 cups of Rice Krispies cereal for a dense Rice Krispie treat square. Just be sure that your marshmallows are very melted to be able to coat and incorporate all of the Rice Krispies. You could also always use another crunchy cereal instead of Rice Krispies (Special K, Trix, etc). If you have leftover Rice Krispies, make these Chocolate Chip Rice Krispie Cookies or Oatmeal Rice Krispie Cookies.
  • Chocolate: Use dark chocolate, bittersweet chocolate, semi-sweet chocolate, or milk chocolate, depending on your preference. Be sure to choose high-quality chocolate such as Ghirardelli or Guittard. Higher-quality chocolate melts better in the microwave and tastes better.
  • Sprinkles: Add the sprinkles while the chocolate is warm and has not yet fully cooled.

📝 How to Make Chocolate Dipped Rice Krispie Treats

Below are the step-by-step instructions and photos for how to make Chocolate Dipped Rice Krispie Treats.

*Note: The recipe card with instructions, ingredient list, and quantities is included further below these step-by-step photos.

A prepared baking dish and a bowl with marshmallows and butter before and after being microwaved.

Step 1. Butter a 9x13 baking dish or line with parchment paper, then butter.

Tip: For super thick rice krispie treats, use a 9x9 square baking dish.

Step 2. In a large microwave-safe bowl, add the butter and marshmallows. Microwave for 1 minute, adding 30 seconds as needed to melt the butter and the marshmallows have expanded and doubled in size.

Tip: Using the microwave is so much simpler and easier and just as effective sd using a double boiler or melting the marshmallows in a large pot on the stove.

A bowl of melted marshmallows and butter next to an image of the same bowl with rice krispies mixed in.

Step 3. Stir the marshmallow mixture to combine the marshmallows and melted butter. Add the Rice Krispies cereal and stir gently to coat all of the Rice Krispies with the marshmallow mixture. Pour the rice krispie mixture into the prepared pan.

Step 4. Take the now-empty marshmallow bag and turn it inside out. Lightly butter it, then put your hand inside the bag and use it to press the Rice Krispies into the baking dish. This protects your hands from getting sticky, and the buttered bag allows you to press the Rice Krispie treats without sticking.

Ensure that the mixture reaches all of the corners and is pressed gently but firmly into the dish. Allow to rest and cool for 10-20 minutes. Cut into squares.

Tip: The thicker, more firmly packed the Rice Krispies, the easier they are to hold together when dipped into chocolate

Step 5. Meanwhile, add the chocolate chips to a medium-sized microwave-safe bowl, preferably with a flat bottom if possible. Microwave for 1 minute, then 30 seconds at a time, stirring in between until melted.

Step 6. Holding the sides, dip each Rice Krispie Treat square into the melted chocolate. Then flip them upside down with the chocolate side up and place them on wax paper or a drying rack. If using sprinkles, add the sprinkles to the top of the chocolate-dipped Rice Krispies Treats immediately. Allow the chocolate to fully cool before eating.

✏️ Tips and Tricks

  • Skip the Stovetop: Use a microwave-safe bowl and heat the marshmallows in the microwave.
  • Don’t Temper the Chocolate: Tempering chocolate is a method of heating the chocolate so that when it cools, it has a glassy, shiny, hard finish. This is a great technique, but not necessary for simple Chocolate-Dipped Rice Krispie Treats. Save time and dip the Rice Krispie Treats in melted chocolate. As long as you use high-quality chocolate, the chocolate will cool and harden, and allow the Rice Krispies to be stacked and stored at room temperature if desired.
  • Pressing the Mixture into the Dish: Use the empty marshmallow bag turned inside out as a type of “oven mitt”. Butter the now outward-facing inside of the bag, put your hand inside, and press the treats into the dish.
  • Add Sprinkles While the Chocolate is Warm: Add the sprinkles immediately after dipping the Rice Krispie Treat in the melted chocolate before the chocolate has cooled and solidified to ensure that they stick. My kids love sprinkles. It makes the littlest things feel extra special by just adding rainbow sprinkles.

🗒️ Recipe FAQs

Can you dip Rice Krispies Treats in chocolate?

Yes, Rice Krispie Treats hold up very well when dipped in chocolate. The firmer and denser the treat (the higher the Rice Krispie to marshmallow ratio), the better it holds up to being dipped in chocolate.

How do I store Rice Krispie treats?

Wait until the treats have cooled and the chocolate has fully set. Store the treats covered in plastic wrap, aluminum foil, or in a gallon-sized Ziploc bag on the counter at room temperature with sheets of wax paper in between. If it is hot where you live, the chocolate is more likely to melt and you may want to store them in the fridge.

How long do the Rice Krispie Treats last?

Chocolate Dipped Rice Krispie Treats last for a week in an airtight container at room temperature, and depending on the weather (humidity, temperature), they may last even longer.
